Friends
Chloe Gouda
Friends are a thing that many people will say “yeah I made some new friends today” or “I ran into some old friends from high school today”. These are things commonly heard but if we're being honest are these people you're seeing actually friends. The definition of friend is : on attached to another by affection or esteem. The definition of acquaintance is: a person whom one knows but is not particularly close to. When we look at statements like the ones that were previously made you can make a clear inference that, no the person that you just met today is not your friend, but as matter of your acquaintance. Now I'm not saying that you won't be friends some time in the future, due to, for a lack of a better word, insane communication technology. All I'm saying is that those two people are most likely not friends yet due to the fact that it is doubtful that you had made enough of an emotional connection with that person to become friends. Also in the scenario where two people that know each other from high school ran into each other, there is a possibility that the pair may have been friends in high school, but they are most likely not friends now if there has been a lack of communication in the relationship since the graduation of high school. In writing this piece, I'm not meaning to be depressing, or say that no one has any friends, because that is completely untrue and most people do have friends. I'm just pointing out the fact that most people we know are simply, acquaintances.
