The Pros and Cons of Change
As students grow older, it is brought to the attention of many people how school start times become progressively earlier, and earlier, sometimes exceeding the start times of adult workplaces. The earliest start times are of that for students in older grades,or students between the age of 14 and 18, and those are the start times that have been being debated over heavily, with some people trying to change them to a later time. Today a large amount of the debate is focused on whether or not early start times are healthy for the students being affected by these early times. One side of people believe that the effects of school start times on teens aren't good. The other side of the debate claims that there is nothing wrong with school start times being as early as they are, and that students are doing just fine with the times that school starts.
Are school start times too early?
School starts earlier and earlier as students get older, and many people wonder if schools are starting too early for students to be able to function correctly. It is recommended by the experts at the american academy of pediatrics that “schools start no later than 8:30am” (MIchael Reschke). Also a medical doctor in the mental health field has said that as a nation, no one is getting enough sleep. No one is getting enough sleep, students, adults and everyone inbetween included. Changing school start times would allow people to get more sleep giving them a better mental health outlook on life. The average high school start time is somewhere between 7:40 and
8am. Most high schools start at a time that is relatively close to the time start that is recommended by the AAP. This means that schools have looked into what time starts will be appropriate for students, and they have also tried to stick somewhat close to that time in order to have their students be as successful as they possibly can throughout their school careers.
Are early start times imposing health risks on teens?
Along with the many concerns with school being flat out too early, there are many questions regarding the early start times on weather it is healthy for students to be waking up as early as they are for school. According to the american academy of pediatrics there is a “delayed nocturnal melatonin secretion during adolescence making it difficult for teens to wake up”. Also for mental and biological reasons, the early start time is hard for almost all teens to comprehend, which is why it is often hard for students to wake up and understand what they are learning at early times in the morning. When you are a teenager your sleep schedule is different from the schedule that you had as a young child, and from the schedule that you will have as an adult. When school schedules are designed, students changing sleep schedules often aren’t brought into consideration, and most times the higher grade start times are made to start so teens will be waking up at the same time as an adult, which is a major contributing factor to the reasons why teenagers are so sleep deprived. Though a large number of people believe that early school start do produce some major health risks, there are some people that believe the exact opposite. Matthew Elver is one of these people, and with children of his own, he has a first hand
experience with this topic saying “even though children may have sleep problems parents just need to make their kids go to bed earlier, so that they get the correct amount of sleep”. “Waking up early reduces stress and creates a more positive attitude” (top 10 health benefits to waking up early). Waking up early for school has benefits for the present and the future. When students graduate school, they will be more accustomed to waking up early so waking up for a job won't be as difficult. Also waking up early reduces stress from a person, so if students wake up earlier they won't be putting as much pressure on their bodies and minds from stress, and they will end up having a more positive life.
Would changing school start times be beneficial to everyone?
In the midst of the debate of changing school start times, many people wonder what the affects on communities will be, with some saying that it will benefit everyone, and others saying that it will have a poor effect on communities by making businesses lose workers and customers that are students. A benefit that is brought up in the majority of conversations that people have when discussing later school start times is the fact that when schools delayed their begin times, car crashes went down in that area by 70%, which is a dramatic change. There will be less car accidents in communities is school start times were changed to be later. This will help students that could have potentially caused or been in these car accidents have a better permanent record, which will earn them a better chance at getting their college and job of choice in the future, as well as making the roads in communities safer for people to drive in. Though the
benefits of changing school start times seem like a perfectly good reason to change school start times on the spot, there are still some cons that make people wary of changing school start times. If school districts were to change school start times for older grades, younger grades would be forced to go to school earlier, and parents of younger students would not be alright with that (Nathan hansen). “Many businesses have high school workers working after school, and having school start later would cause businesses to lose money and workers.” (wake up calls- fast facts). Changing school start times would put a lot of pressure on school districts as well as local businesses. School districts would have to focus mainly on changing school start times, taking away focus on other important topic. Local businesses would lose workers during those shifts, as well as binsness during those shifts, because instead of being at said business during that time, students will be in school.
Conclusion
In today's era, there is a large population of people that believe that school start times should be later in a way to help with students in general as well as help the community. Although there are many people are opposing to the idea of later school start times, saying it won't change anything for students, and that if school start times were to change to be later for older grades than it would have a very negative effect on the community that is surrounding that school district. As you read on the opinions and facts supporting both sides, you should have been able to tell that there are many different opinions regarding whether or not school start times should be changed.
It is important that you realize that no matter what, these issues may always affect you, whether you are a student, or you are a person that lives in a community surrounding a school district. In the end there is only one question that cannot be answered for you, should school start times be changed?

The Meaning Behind the Music
Listening to favorite music can make a person feel joy. Certain music may hold a certain amount of feeling in your heart, like not particularly caring for hip hop or country, but there is always a type of music that can make a person happy, although some people may disagree with that . One of my favorite bands is One Direction, and I know that whenever I listen to their music,I always feel happy. If I am having a bad day I will turn on one of their songs and it will make my day just a little bit brighter. In short, listening to favorite music can make a person feel happier, or make their day just a bit brighter. Due to this, people could use favorite music to help their lives be better if they had a disorder such as depression, just to help them be a bit happier. This shows that even if a person isn't having the best day, music can help their life be a bit better. Also, according to news.discovery.com “...listening to music causes the brain to release dopamine-a feel good chemical” (Shon). This means that when you listen to music, your body will respond to it in a way that is meant to make you feel good. That proves that if you are a person that listens to music regularly, even if it is music that isn't necessarily your favorite, you will be a more positive person due to dopamine levels in your body being high. In conclusion, my claim, my previous piece of evidence, and this piece of evidence all correspond with the idea that music makes you happier person. In the end, music is one of the most important things in the world, and it can help you with almost anything.

The Concert by Chloe Gouda 10/22/15
I wait
Salt tears streaming down my face
for the music to blast
Nerves coursing through the crowd
as the strobe lights go
and butterflies erupt in my stomach
After an eternity
the boys come into my line of vision
and my eyes fill with love
and my ears fill with their melodic music
The feeling of glee
it fills my voice
as the boys, the crowd, and me all sing happy birthday to liam
The tears stream
as they sing a slow sweet song
You can feel the excitment buzzing here
for me it was like i was a balloon that was about to burst from joy and excitement
while the boys sing
But it is almost like there is an elephant in the room
and that elephant is that i dont want it to end
because ending means that what i had been waiting for was over
and that i may never see
or hear
the amazing boys in person again
Love and adoration is bouncing from wall to wall
From 65,000 loving fans
to 4 lovable boys
1 big happy family
from those 3 boys from england and that 1 very adorable lad from Ireland
Who brought us all together
And never fail to make me laugh, smile, sing and dance, and pick my spirits up
but most of all
They make me happy
